What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is permanent hair removal through a series of treatments and is effective on all hair types. It's ideal for clients with fine, dark hairs or lightly colored hairs such as blond, red and gray. Electrolysis is your best option for expert, detailed eyebrow shaping, treating small areas or thinning out peach fuzz. It can also be used as a follow up to our laser hair removal services, treating any remaining light hairs.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as well as the AMA (American Medical Association) recognize electrolysis as permanent hair removal. It has stood the test of time through many years, since it was first used in 1875 to remove an ingrown eyelash.

How does Electrolysis work?

Today, each hair is treated individually with a fine disposable, hair-thin probe. This probe is expertly inserted down the follicle, alongside the hair until it reaches the root. A small amount of heat is then applied to destroy the root. The hair is gently lifted from the follicle. Multiple treatments are required in order to completely destroy the hair follicle. Coarser hairs require more treatments than fine hairs, and the complete removal of an area requires more treatments than thinning out an area.

What kind of training does an Electrologist have?

Our Registered Electrologists are licensed in the state of Massachusetts. We have completed an 1100 hour course of training and successfully passed a practical exam as well as a written exam. These courses and exams are regulated and administered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Board of Electrology. In order to renew and maintain our license, we are required to complete continuing education classes, which are randomly audited.

Westwood Electrolysis follows strict standards for Infection Control written by the American Electrology Association. These standards comply with the most recent recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

Only disposable probes are used. We dry-heat sterilize our non-disposable instruments and we are a latex free environment. Please call or e-mail us to schedule your complimentary consultation for laser hair removal, electrolysis or photofacial today!
